The time in a photograph
is not always an instant.
An ordinary photograph records the brief instant the shutter is open. In my work, the length of time a photograph holds differs from piece to piece: some are made with a handmade scanner camera over ten seconds to three minutes; some stitch time-lapse footage into a single image covering anywhere from a minute to about a month; and one pairs my grandfather's photographs with my own, taken in the same places decades later. Drawing on years of maintaining factory equipment, I build my own cameras, lenses and programs for many of these works.

Through equipment management work in a factory, I became focused on the fundamental differences in visual cognition between humans and machines. Rather than relying on commercially available cameras, I explore new photographic expressions that emerge from dialogue between humans and the unique perspectives of devices by creating my own imaging apparatus — cameras, lenses, and programs.
Drawing on an engineering background, I develop original technologies including line-sensor imaging devices, circuit-bent equipment, and systems that link directly with the photographer's movements and senses — works that reveal new boundaries between humans and machines.
