Ousouzu
The time of a withering flower, captured in a single image — a record of having lived.
作品についてAbout the work
There is a Buddhist painting called Kusōzu, the “Nine Stages of Decay.” It depicts a body decomposing after death in nine stages, expressing impermanence: however beautiful a person may be, all return to nothing in the end.
Around the time I turned thirty, I began to think of the Kusōzu whenever I felt my own body aging — and to think seriously about how to live until I die.
This work records flowers withering over time using a technique called slit-scan. Because it records the time leading up to a passing, I named it Ousouzu, after the Kusōzu.
Just as no two people live the same life, no two flowers age the same way. As they wither, they reveal — beyond anything we expect — the proof that they have lived, and, I believe, remind us how precious the process of living is.
手法についてThe technique
Slit-scan records an image one thin line (slit) at a time, shifting the moment of capture for each line. In this work, the process is done in software.
Where an ordinary photograph captures a single instant, a slit-scan image holds a long stretch of time — the slow withering of a flower — within one frame. The video shows how the process works.
